Lexus looking to distance itself from Toyota, move more upscale
May 08, 2012 - 10:53 AM - by Lexus News
Filed under: Car Buying, Sedan, Etc., Marketing/Advertising, Lexus, Luxury

Automotive News reports Lexus may use the company's new GS to put some distance between itself and parent company Toyota. Buyers have snapped up a total of 4,900 GS models in just two months, breezing by year-long sales estimates in the process. The company attributes much of that success to non-traditional advertising efforts, including the Tori 500 iPhone and iPad app, and says that it could use similar tactics in the future to lure buyers in based on traits like "character and handling." Traditionally, consumers have turned toward Lexus because of Toyota's reputation for efficient and reliable machinery.

The GS, with its hour-glass grille and aggressive front fascia, is a first-step in giving the luxury automaker a more distinct brand image. In the past, Lexus has had trouble keeping buyers coming back, and the company believes that's partly due to the fact that luxury consumers are more interested in owning a brand than a particular vehicle. Google adds hybrid Lexus RX450h to autonomous fleet
Apr 18, 2012 - 9:06 AM - by Lexus News
Filed under: Hybrid, SUV, Technology, Lexus, Luxury

The Google self-driving-vehicle fleet has grown by one. According to Wired, the tech giant has added a black Lexus RX450h to its autonomous stable. The hybrid SUV was spotted out on the road for testing wearing a new roof-mounted sensor array that's significantly more streamlined than the gear found on the company's autonomous Toyota Prius models. Google says it is constantly testing its driving algorithms on a wide range of vehicles in order to refine the technology, and that the RX450h is merely the latest step in that process.

Google first began unleashing its driverless cars onto public streets in 2010 using a fleet comprised of six Prius hybrids and one Audi TT. The company's work has spurred the California legislature to draft a bill requiring the California Highway Patrol to outline safety standards for autonomous vehicles. Wired reports the legislation passed the state's Senate Transportation Committee with an 8-0 vote... [Read More]

Next-gen Lexus IS mule caught circulating
Apr 16, 2012 - 4:00 PM - by Lexus News
Filed under: Spy Photos, Sedan, Performance, Lexus, Luxury

For a car that still hasn't donned its new body yet, not even under copious camouflage, there's been chatter about the 2014 Lexus IS for an awful long time. We saw the first mule 18 months ago, and it was about that time that intel predicted Lexus' next-generation small sport sedan would run on a four-door version of the Scion FT-86 chassis and be followed by a coupe.

The snappers at CarPix caught a modern mule out on test, the only change so far from 2010 being the panels obscuring the front intakes and a roll of packing tape applied to some panel gaps. The car we eventually see will continue the sportification of the Lexus brand in both appearance and capability. As well, the IS-F begat by this IS, having been planned for and developed from the beginning, should really show us what an M3-fighting Lexus can do.... [Read More]

Toyota working on even more exotic followup to Lexus LFA?
Apr 11, 2012 - 6:13 PM - by Lexus News

Many countries have produced supercars with price tags that dip into the six figures, but that rare breed of exotic that fetches upwards of a quarter million is all but completely exclusive to Europe: Ferrari, Lamborghini and Pagani out of Italy, Bugatti from France, McLaren and higher-end Aston Martin models of Britain, top-of-the-line Porsche offerings from Germany, Koenigsegg of Sweden and so on. That's what makes the Lexus LFA so exceptional. It extends beyond the Acura NSX and the Nissan GT-R that previously defined the top end of Japanese supercars and joins its European rivals at the very top of the market. But that, we're reading, is only the beginning.

According to a shadowy anonymous source cornered by AutoGuide, Toyota is already working on a successor to the LFA,... [Read More]

2013 Lexus GS earns IIHS Top Safety Pick
Apr 10, 2012 - 1:44 PM - by Lexus News
Filed under: Sedan, Safety, Lexus, Luxury

The 2013 GS is the new face of the Lexus brand, and as it turns out, that spindle-grilled mug can take a serious punch. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named the GS a Top Safety Pick after the reshaped Lexus sedan held strong in front, side and rollover crash testing.

To earn a Top Safety Pick designation, a car, truck or utility vehicle must achieve a top score of "Good" in front, side and rear impact crash tests. The IIHS test features taller cement crash barriers to simulate a collision with a larger vehicle and the front impact test is conducted at a speed of 40 miles per hour. The vehicle must also feature stability control and a roof that maintains integrity even at a weight equal to or greater than four times that of the vehicle. The IIHS reports that the GS could withstand 4.88 times its 3,715 pound weight.

The GS joins the RX and the CT 200h as the third Lexus model to net a Top Safety Pick.... [Read More]

Lexus prices updated RX among other models
Apr 09, 2012 - 5:10 PM - by Lexus News
Filed under: Car Buying, Crossover, Lexus, Luxury

So a new front-drive Lexus RX 350 will now set you back $40,185, but that's really not the most interesting pricing news from Lexus. That would be the RX 350 F Sport, which debuts for the 2013 model year in July, carrying a base sticker of $47,875.

While all versions of the RX get the new spindle grille, the F Sport packs Lexus' eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and a performance-tuned suspension that employs Lexus Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management, akin to what's available on the GS line. Cosmetic enhancements include a mesh grille and F Sport badges, aluminum pedals and black leather seats with contrasting white stitching. A unique set of 19-inch wheels completes the package, which we look forward to getting our hands on.

Lexus has also announced the base price of its hybrid RX, which will start at $46,805, and the hybrid GS. When the 2013 GS 450h goes on sale in May, it will be priced from $59,845. Additionally, the 2012 Lexus IS will see the price bumped $200 across the board. Scroll down to read the... [Read More]

Lexus debuts 2013 ES including new 300h hybrid
Apr 04, 2012 - 2:19 PM - by Lexus News
Filed under: New York Auto Show, Hybrid, Sedan, Lexus, Luxury

When the Toyota Camry gets overhauled, like it did this year, you know it's not long before its corporate sister, the Lexus ES, gets revisited as well. And Lexus has done exactly that this afternoon at the New York Auto Show, with the new model doing what the ES does best: Surprise no one.

As expected, the biggest news is the announcement of a hybrid ES, a move that should be the final nail in the coffin of the slow-selling HS 250h. This new hybrid is essentially the Camry hybrid in a nicer package, powered by the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder fitted with the ubiquitous Toyota hybrid system. As it does in the hybrid ... 2013 Lexus ES teased ahead of New York debut
Mar 28, 2012 - 3:54 PM - by Lexus News
Filed under: New York Auto Show, Sedan, Lexus, Luxury

Lexus has released this teaser image of the 2013 ES sedan, and - surprise, surprise - it shows off the spindle grille and LED running lamps found on each and every one of the automaker's vehicles. More to the point, it looks exactly like what we saw in a set of Chinese spy shots that we posted last month, so really, there isn't much left for us to speculate on in terms of design.

The Camry-based Lexus mid-sizer will likely debut in ES 350 guise, powered by Toyota's tried-and-true 3.5-liter V6. And while, historically, there's only been one engine offered in the ES range, rumor has it that this sixth-generation model may gain a hybrid variant with a version of the Camry Hybrid's gasoline-electric powertrain. Regardless, Lexus states that the new ES will feature "a new dynamic driving experience." We'll see about that.

Inside, expect a host of updates similar to what we've seen on the GS sedan, including a larger... [Read More]

Lexus LF-LC super coupe concept pondered for production
Mar 26, 2012 - 4:48 PM - by Lexus News
Filed under: Concept Cars, Coupe, Hybrid, Performance, Europe, Lexus, Design/Style, Luxury

Autocar reports Lexus may be mulling a production version of the company's LF-LC Concept. After receiving a near universally positive reception following its unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show this year, Karl Schlicht, head of Lexus product planning, reportedly gave the vehicle a 50-50 shot at hitting dealers sometime in the future. Those aren't great odds, but it is a change of tone from when the vehicle first hit the stage. Back in January, Toyota made it very clear the LF-LC was strictly a concept. As you may recall, the vehicle is a 2+2 coupe with a hybrid drivetrain and a low-slung presence.

According to Schlicht, the vehicle would have never even been considered for production if it had merely been submitted as a design proposal. With a physical concept backed by chorus of positive reviews, the... [Read More]

Are you the next Lexus LS?
Mar 20, 2012 - 11:07 AM - by Lexus News
Filed under: Sedan, Videos, Lexus, Design/Style, Luxury

We hope you like the look of the new Lexus GS. The Japanese luxury automaker has made it clear it aims to spread the new "spindle" grille found on the sedan across the brand. During an interview with Takayuki Katsuda, chief engineer for the RX line, four teaser images were splashed across the screen, including what looks to be the next-generation LS. If that's true, the model will wear a heavily accented version of the Predator maw, complete with a chrome or brushed metal accent frame. Likewise, the headlamps will boast metal (or metal-effect) trim work of their own, complete with a dual-projector array.

Other reports have indicated the teaser may hint to what buyers can expect to see from the LS 600h F Sport when the model arrives.

In addition to the LS teaser, the video also flashes a brief glimpse at vehicles like the GS 450h, CT 200h F Sport and the upcoming ES. Hit... [Read More]
