The temperature gauge on a car is not an accurate indicator of coolant temperature. (Notice it is not calibrated in degrees). If the temperature rises a lot while going up hills and/or in hot weather with the climate control running, the cooling system may have issues. Near the middle of the gauge is a normal range. A mechanic will be happy to check the coolant temperature for you with a calibrated thermometer if you are concerned.

i would suggest you take the car to a local mechanic to go over before you buy it if the seller won't let you he is hiding something, it will be the best $50 you will ever spend on the car and you will know what if anything is wrong also the mechanic will tell you if you are getting a reasonable deal or not

the car sounds ok to me, definitely have it looked at for your own good...btw, the 92-93 versions had overheating problems.....
