View Full Version : How often should you change your oil?
ZoomCity 10-01-2007, 05:07 PM To be honest, I don't drive my car daily back and for to work. That is what my beater is for. I drive my car here and their on nice days. I put maybe 1,000-2,000 miles per year on her. So would it be alright to change my oil once every 1 1/2 years like I have been doing or will that cause damage?
Lexus Forums 10-01-2007, 05:11 PM It depends on where you live. You can get away with a longer wait between oil changes when you live in warmer climates...
ZoomCity 10-01-2007, 05:18 PM It's actually only driven in the summer and it sits in the garage from November till around May. So it sits in very cold weather, but is driven when the temp is around 70-80.
kristen 10-01-2007, 05:30 PM That should be fine, I never change mine as often as they say and I never have had any problems so far.
walley 10-01-2007, 06:46 PM You will be just fine, I don't know of anyone that changes their oil every 3 months or 3,000 miles anymore.
aceofspades 10-02-2007, 03:13 AM I change mine twice a year and that is only because I have a long comute to work and home. I drive a lot more than the average person :)

markn26 10-02-2007, 08:01 PM I change my oil about every 4-5 thousand miles or so depending on the time I have to do it myself.
ZachIS 10-02-2007, 08:08 PM I wouldn't worrry about changing your oil as much as everyone will say. Once a year is just fine :)

You drove you car only 1000-2000 miles per year? If it is then there is nothing to worry about oil changes and I hope you even don't need to have tire changes:D
LexusFan 10-06-2007, 08:53 AM I don't drive one of these, but in my good cars I change the oil once every 3-4 thousand miles. In my work car about once a year.

Great minds think a like, I'm just about the same way with all of my vehicles.
CarFanatic 10-07-2007, 10:27 AM I play by the rules, once every 3,000 miles or 3 months. Which ever comes first. I have to keep my cars running like new!

That is the best rule and we should follow this because it is a standard rule. I always go with an oil change after a fix mileage.

That's a good rule to go by. I always go a little over 3,000 or 3 months though just because it shouldn't hurt to much.
Lexus Forums 10-09-2007, 10:29 AM Unless I'm mistaken, they've changed from the original thought of 3,000 miles to about 5,000 miles now.. I'm not sure why.. Maybe the oils are better these days...

I do agree... I don't even have to look at the oil sticker they put on my car after they change it, I just keep track of mileage.
I don't own an IS model, but I change my oil once very 3-4 thousand miles or so.

I would change your oil more often if you're using regular oil.
Plus sitting in cold weather like you mention causes condensation.
Regular oil doesn't hold additives as long as synthetics.Oil will always be oil but the important additive package wears.Once exposed to combustion your oil will break down just sitting.
With synthetic oil you can go a year.
Oil changes aren't expensive.Why take a chance?
Even Amsoil doesn't recommend keep their oil in a vehicle for more than a year.
Once a year for me on the IS.
Only do 6-7K and use Amsoil.
The wife's RAV4 goes one year which is about 12-13K miles.

I own several cars that I only drive when it's nice out. What about if you only drive one of them lets say 500 miles per year. How often should you change the oil?

I would say once every other year and you should be good as long as you take care of it which I'm sure you do.
I will change the oil of my car when ever I find that it is needed.Mile meter will tell me because I keep the record of oil change.I think for oil change time does not stand as a reason .
